About the workshop
We are all constantly struggling to find new ways to make theatre work. For thirty years Scott Johnston has been devising theatre and trying to find techniques that allow us to investigate and develop theatre and text from nothing. The huge influences on his work have been the work of Augusto Boal, working in Eastern Europe and Africa and with young people in Scotland. The workshop will share some of the games and exercises he has developed and show how to apply them in a practical way.
The two days will be informative, participative and allow you to leave with practical tools and exercises to use in your own work. It should also be fun. Fun is a serious business!
Scott Johnston
Scott started his career working in the Craigmillar area of Edinburgh in 1980, learning far more about theatre working with what were then termed “school refusers”, than three years at drama school. Since then he has worked with theatres over three continents and twenty countries and has directed and devised over eighty performances. He was the Artistic Director of the West Lothian Youth Theatre for 15 years and in 1993 he started a working collaboration with Romanian theatres and since then has directed 5 professional plays and run workshops at the National University Academy of Theatre and the National Theatre of Romania. Other notable workshops have been at Paramount studios in Los Angeles, the National Theatre in Kishinau and workshops for National Association of Youth Theatre (England and Wales), National Association of Youth Drama (Ireland) and Promote YT (Scotland). His most recent work was a devised project in Romanian and English in Bucuresti at the Teatrul de Comedie.
Scott’s company SCOTTWORKS devises workshops and training for the statutory and voluntary sectors. At present he is the Curriculum Leader for Acting and Performance at Edinburgh’s Telford College and Associate Artist (International and Education) at Cumbernauld Theatre.
